Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department Observation Unit provides skilled nursing care to adult patients requiring additional observation to determine the need for hospital admission or safe discharge. This role involves managing a high patient turnover in a fast-paced environment, caring for diverse patients ranging from short stays to full admissions. The RN collaborates with a 24/7 provider team to deliver comprehensive care, ensuring patient safety and effective treatment planning.

Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care to adult patients in the observation unit.
• Perform patient assessments, monitor telemetry, and manage patient care plans.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including physicians and other healthcare providers.
• Manage patient flow and turnover efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
• Document patient care and communicate changes in patient condition promptly.
• Support admission, discharge, and transfer processes for observation and admitted patients.
• Participate in emergency response and maintain compliance with hospital policies.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in New York State only.
• Minimum of two years of Medical/Surgical nursing experience.
• Telemetry monitoring experience.
• BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
• ACLS certification from the American Heart Association.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience working in Emergency Department or Observation Unit settings.
• Familiarity with electronic medical records and hospital information systems.
• Strong interdisciplinary team collaboration skills.

Special Considerations:

• Must be able to work days, evenings, nights, and rotating shifts.
• On-call and call back responsibilities as needed.
• Ability to work holidays and weekends as required.
• Charge nurse duties may be assigned.
• Fast-paced, high patient turnover environment requiring adaptability and strong clinical judgment.

Scheduling:

• Rotating shifts including day, evening, and night shifts.
• Shift schedules may include weekends, holidays, and on-call periods.
• Shift assignments determined based on unit needs and staffing requirements.
